Retaining Walls
Stop erosion, create usable space, and add permanent structure to sloped properties. We design and build retaining walls that handle NC's clay soil and heavy rainfall.
Built to Hold. Designed to Last.
Every retaining wall we build includes proper drainage behind it — the single most important factor in how long a wall lasts. No drainage shortcuts.
Segmental Block
The most durable and cost-effective option. Allan Block, Versa-Lok, and similar systems rated for 40–60 year lifespans.
Natural Stone
Dry-stack or mortared fieldstone for a traditional, timeless look. Pairs beautifully with native plantings.
Tiered Garden Walls
Multiple smaller walls creating terraced planting areas. Turns a problem slope into beautiful usable garden space.
Seating Walls
Walls designed at 18–20 inches with capstone create functional outdoor seating alongside their structural role.
Drainage Integration
Gravel backfill and perforated drain pipe behind every wall. The drainage is what makes the wall last.
Engineered Design
Walls over 4 feet follow NC engineering requirements. We handle the design and permitting process.

When do I need a retaining wall?
You need a retaining wall when you have a slope that's eroding, a grade change you want to terrace for usable space, or areas where water is running downhill and eroding your landscape. In NC's Piedmont, sloped yards with clay soil are particularly prone to erosion after rain — a properly designed retaining wall solves this permanently.
What materials do you use for retaining walls?
We build with segmental concrete block (most common, very durable), natural stone (beautiful, traditional look), timber (good for lower walls in less formal settings), and poured concrete (for larger structural walls). The right material depends on wall height, load requirements, and aesthetic goals.
How much does a retaining wall cost?
Segmental block retaining walls run $25–$50 per square foot of face area. A typical 3-foot-tall wall that's 40 feet long (120 sq ft face) costs $3,000–$6,000. Natural stone runs higher — $40–$80+ per square face foot. Walls over 4 feet tall typically require engineering review per NC code.
Do retaining walls need drainage behind them?
Yes — drainage is the most critical part of a retaining wall installation. Without proper drainage, hydrostatic pressure from saturated soil will eventually push the wall over, regardless of how well it was built. We install gravel backfill and perforated drain pipe behind every wall as standard practice.
How long does a retaining wall last?
Properly installed segmental block walls last 40–60+ years. Natural stone walls, if properly built, can last a century or more. The drainage behind the wall is usually what determines longevity — walls with inadequate drainage fail much sooner.
Can retaining walls double as seating or garden walls?
Absolutely — and this is often the best approach. A wall designed at seating height (18–20 inches) with a capstone creates functional outdoor seating. We design retaining walls to serve multiple purposes: grade management, erosion control, and beautiful outdoor living features.
